Workshop Descriptions

Workshop 1: Ink & Print  March 16, 23 - A wise printmaker once said, "if you can ink it, you can print it".  Younger students will make stamps from sections of fruits and vegetables, as well as other textures, such as cardboard and leaves, and printing on paper and fabric to create colourful compositions.  Older students will also be introduced to the Japanese art of "gyotaku", painting real fish and printing them on fabric.

Workshop 2: Book Bag Block Printing  March 17, 24 - Create your own stamps from Styrofoam, foam rubber and wood, then use them to print patterns to create your own personalized book bags, bookmarks and cards.

Workshop 3: Plastic Printing  March 18, 25 - Etching and painting on plexi-glass.  Create colourful drypoint etchings by drawing on plexi-glass "plates" with engraving tools and ink, then add colour to the drawings with coloured inks using rollers, brushes and rags. Finally, print the image on cotton paper using a press.

Workshop 4: Collage & Composition  March 19, 26 - mixed media - use acrylics and collage to create a composition on canvas or board.  Collage is a way to deconstruct and reconstruct images and affect the way we view the world.  Collage can challenge our notions of what is real.  Collaging is boundless.  We will collect all sorts of treasures and organize them into an enticing buffet.  Each child will then choose what appeals to them and arrange the loose parts and papers into interesting combination and composition, and then commit the ideas to paper with a glue stick.  Lastly, we will do mark making and some painting on the surface to create the finished piece.

Please bring magazines, appealing papers or even bits of cloth you have on hand.  If you have a favourite pair of scissors, also bring those along.  If you don't have these materials don't worry, there will be plenty on hand.

Workshop, 5: Sculpture  March 20, 27 - create three-dimensional sculptures from found objects.
