Musical Performance with LFAS Students-February 28th, 7pm at the Fort Gallery .  The gallery is pleased to welcome a musical trio comprised of Langley Fine Arts School students Sam Meyer, Tiffany Pai, and Cindy Zhang to the first 4th Friday of 2020.  The three will be performing selections of baroque, classical and contemporary music, with perhaps a bit of fiddling thrown in.

Sam is a grade 12 student in the music program at LFAS and plays trumpet, violin and viola.  He plans to major in classical trumpet performance at university, as well as continuing on with the violin and viola.  Tiffany Pai is in grade 11 and majoring in music at LFAS.  She has her ARCT in piano and RCM level 10 in violin.  She plays first violin in the Vancouver Youth Symphony Senior Orchestra and is concertmaster in the Langley Symphony Orchestra.  Cindy Zhang is a grade 12 music major at LFAS.  Cindy has been playing cello for 7 years and has been part of the LFAS Orchestra for 4 years.  She plans to study music in university to continue feeding her passion for the cello. 

​This month's 4th Friday will be held in conjunction with Anne Steves' exhibition A-Luring Object(s), on view February 20-March 28.

Robson Singers Carolling + Society Member Appreciation Night (please note date change)-Dec 13th, 7pm at the Fort Gallery .  December's guests, the Robson Singers, will lead us in carol singing.  The Robson Singers is a choral group composed of Dayna Coulter, Katie Henthorne, Maria Krause and Tricia Coleman.

month's 4th Friday will be held in conjunction with the gallery's annual Christmas group exhibition, The Christmas Mystery Show, on view Nov 21 - Dec 22.

Poetry Reading with Connie Braun-Nov 22nd, 7pm at the Fort Gallery .  November's guest, poet Connie Braun will read from Narrow Passageway: Portals, Archways and Thresholds.  Connie Braun is a university instructor and has published books of non-fiction, poetry chapbooks, and her academic and personal essays, poetry and reviews appear in various journals and anthologies.  A full member of the League of Canadian Poets and the Canadian Author's Association, Connie lives in Vancouver and is completing a new book of poetry.  This month's 4th Friday will be held in conjunction with the opening for The Christmas Mystery Show, on view Nov 21 - Dec 22.

Art Event with Performing Artist Fadwa Bouziane  (Please note date change)-October 18th, 7pm at the Fort Gallery .  This month's guest artist Fadwa Bouziane will perform, concurrent with the opening reception for Russna Kaur's latest exhibition She was there for a while...  Fadwa's artistic practice exposes culturally charged concepts concerned with identity, diaspora, displacement, race and immigration and grief.  Her interactions with these concepts is based on experiences of her family and community.  In her work, these concepts emerge as performance art pieces and storytelling.

Daniel Tones-Sept 27th, 7-9pm at the Fort Gallery
Experience the award-winning percussion sounds of  Daniel Tones against a backdrop of landscape and botanical paintings by Ray Ophoff.  Daniel is an award-winning percussionist widely recognized for his work as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed with some of the biggest names in the percussion world and has been broadcast nationally on radio and television. He was the first person to receive a doctorate in percussion performance from a Canadian university.  Refreshments provided.  Admission by donation.

Izzy Cenedese-August 23rd, 7-9pm at the Fort Gallery
Listen to the music of Izzy Cenedese while surrounded by our latest exhibit Spoonful by Panagiotis Peter Sarganis.  Izzy is a 17 year old graduate of Langley Fine Arts School.  She has been writing music nearly every day since a young age, and this has led her to some amazing opportunities.  She's performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra three times, had an original song scored for orchestra and then performed with that orchestra, and she’s had the opportunity to sing from a second story window in the show RADIOHEAD RE_COVERED.  Izzy is currently working on an EP full of songs which she hopes to release soon.  Refreshments provided.  Admission by donation.

Gordon's Jazz Trio-July 26th, 7-9pm at the Fort Gallery
Experience 
Beyond Barrier, Vancouver-based artist Jenny Hawkinson's latest exhibit and listen to the sounds of smooth jazz from Gordon's Jazz Trio. Gordon Edmunds has been playing guitar since he was 16.  He'll be joined by Grant Lamonthe on bass with a touch of harmonica and Bob Nagle on bongos.  The trio plays mostly in the Fort Langley area.  Wine and refreshments provided. Admission by donation.

Art Event with Musicians Kat Wahamaa and Tony Rees  (Please note date change)- June 21st, 7pm at the Fort Gallery .  This musical duo will delight us with their eclectic musical tastes, harmonic sensibilities and timeless tunes, concurrent with the gallery's 2019 juried photography exhibition Traces.
 
Kat & Tony write and play beautiful music together and are real life partners, too.  Everything Blue is their first album of co-writes and delves further into their roots, jazz and blues cupboard.  katandtony.ca.

 Artist Talk - May 23rd, 7-9pm at the Fort Gallery.  Two artists who worked closely with Nancy Crawford for many years will talk about her work in our current exhibition With Love and Gratitude: The Encaustic Art of Nancy Joan Crawford.
 
Artist/Teacher Julia Bennett taught with Nancy for many years; during this time they had several joint shows, both at the Fort Gallery in Fort Langley and at the Mary Pratt gallery at the Langley Fine Arts School. Julia will talk about working with Nancy on these exhibitions.
 
Artist/Sister Cindy Wilker had many opportunities to work closely with Nancy, both in Langley and in her overseas workshops. This allowed her to study first hand the many techniques that Nancy brought to her encaustic painting practice and gain valuable insights into her processes and conceptual framework. Cindy will relay these experiences and introduce selected video tutorials by Nancy herself that will shed light on how she created her encaustic collections.

Writer's Event with Susan McCaslin - April 26th, 7-9 pm, at the Fort Gallery. The gallery will host Fort Langley poet/author Susan McCaslin who will read from her most recent book on Thomas Merton, concurrent with the gallery's 2019 juried exhibition Imprint. 

Susan McCaslin is a poet and Thomas Merton scholar who has recently collaborated with J.S. Porter on a volume of creative non-fiction, Superabundantly Alive: Thomas Merton’s Dance with the Feminine (Wood Lake, Oct. 2018).  Her talk explores how Merton’s union of words and silences has the capacity to imprint wisdom on the minds and hearts of engaged readers. www.susanmccaslin.ca

Poetry Reading - March 29th, 7-9pm, at the Fort Gallery. The gallery is playing host to a number of local poets for a poetry reading on the subject of birds, concurrent with printmaker Edith Krause’s, An Avian Alphabet – It’s for the Birds!  We will hear from Astrid Blodgett, who will be reading poems by her father E.D. Blodgett (1935-2018), Deb DeJong, Heidi Greco, Susan McCaslin, Ray McGinnis, Lee Johnson and Celeste Snowber.  Wine and refreshments provided.  Free admission.

Artist Talk / Bird Talk - March 22nd, 7-9pm at the Fort Gallery. Experience An Avian Alphabet - It's for the Birds!, meet the artist Edith Krause and hear a talk by both Edith and Environmental Consultant and bird enthusiast Phil Henderson.  Wine and refreshments provided.  Free admission.
