Workshop Descriptions
In this engaging outdoor art camp, we take inspiration from colours, textures and shapes found in nature. Over the course of the week campers participate in art activities that introduce printmaking, painting, collage and sculpture as well as a large collaborative painting that we will add to throughout the week. Art activities are supplemented with stories, games and nature walks that connect children with the wonder of the natural world.
WORKSHOP 1: NATURE INK & PRINT – “if you can ink it, you can print it” Students will explore the shapes and textures in nature, make stamps from fruits, vegetables, even fish (the Japanese art of “gyotaku”) and transfer textures we find outdoors: leaves, bark, wood, etc., to paper and fabric (T-shirts.)
WORKSHOP 2: COLLAGE Inspired by the colorful illustrations of Eric Carle and the paper cuts of Henri Matisse we will create playful outdoor scenes using hand-painted paper.
WORKSHOP 3: PRINTING WITH PLASTIC – Students will apply their drawing, painting and compositional skills on plexi-glass. Using engraving tools to create lines, and rollers and rags to apply colour, they can create full colour compositions on rag paper using a printing press.
WORKSHOP 4: EARTH WORK SCULPTURES In the tradition of artists like Andy Goldsworthy we will work with natural materials considering pattern, texture and colour in creating 3D earthworks.
WORKSHOP 5: TEXTILE DESIGN WITH BLOCK PRINTING – Students will create multiple stamps from Styrofoam, foam rubber and wood. By printing these blocks in multiples, they can create eye-catching patterns on their own personalized book bags, bookmarks and cards.
DAILY PAINTING PROJECT: - Each day, students will have an opportunity to participate in painting a mural that will be hung on the north exterior wall of the Fort Gallery. They’ll imagine what the forest looks like when you’re squinting and be challenged to make their own painting tools from materials from nature to aid them in creating an abstract “action painting”.
